A female prison officer has been arrested after a video showing her engaging in sexual acts with an inmate at HMP Wandsworth went viral on social media. The video, which was reportedly filmed inside a cell at the prison, has sparked outrage and raised serious concerns about security and ethical conduct within the prison system.
The Metropolitan Police launched an investigation after the video emerged on social media, and the woman was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office on June 28. She has been taken into police custody, and enquiries are ongoing.
A Prison Service spokesperson stated, "Staff corruption is not tolerated, and the former prison officer allegedly featured in this video has been reported to the police."
The incident comes just two months after a watchdog called for HMP Wandsworth to be put into emergency measures due to concerns over security and severe problems with overcrowding, drugs, violence, and self-harm. Chief inspector of prisons Charlie Taylor warned that security remained a "serious concern" at the prison, with "chaotic" wings and staff unable to "accurately account for their prisoners during the working day."
The video, which circulated on social media on June 28, shows the prisoner and staff member engaging in sexual acts in a cell at HMP Wandsworth. The footage was apparently filmed on a mobile phone by a second inmate, who could be heard saying, "Guys, we've made history." Colleagues could be heard on the officer's radio, which had been left on a side table.
The incident has once again put the spotlight on the challenges faced by the UK's prison system, particularly at HMP Wandsworth, which has been plagued by overcrowding, violence, and drug use. The Ministry of Justice has been urged to take swift action to address these issues and restore public confidence in the prison system.
