House Speaker Mike Johnson has accused Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas of attempting to block Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle from testifying before Congress. This accusation comes amid ongoing investigations into the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania.

According to Speaker Johnson, Secretary Mayorkas is trying to prevent Director Cheatle from appearing before the House Homeland Security Committee to provide testimony regarding the security measures in place during the rally and the response to the shooting. The Committee is currently conducting an oversight hearing to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack and the actions taken by the Secret Service and other agencies.

Secretary Mayorkas has not yet publicly responded to these allegations, but a spokesperson for the DHS has stated that the Department has responded to the Committee and relayed that Director Cheatle welcomes the opportunity to testify. However, there seems to be some confusion over the timing of her appearance, with the DHS not confirming that Cheatle will testify on the scheduled date of July 22.

The House Homeland Security Committee is one of several congressional committees and agencies investigating the assassination attempt, including the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General. The incident has raised serious questions about the security measures in place to protect political candidates and the response of the Secret Service and other agencies.

As the investigation continues, the accusations against Secretary Mayorkas add another layer of complexity to an already contentious situation. The outcome of this dispute and the subsequent testimony, if it occurs, could have significant implications for the ongoing investigations and the security of political candidates in the future.
