South Carolina Congresswoman Vows to Continue Fight for Women's Safety After Attack
Washington, D.C. - December 11, 2024
In a shocking incident that has reignited debates over safety and politics on Capitol Hill, Representative Nancy Mace from South Carolina was physically assaulted inside the Rayburn House Office Building on Tuesday evening. The U.S. Capitol Police swiftly arrested the suspect, identified as James McIntyre, 33, from Illinois, on charges of assaulting a government official.
The attack, which occurred just before 6 p.m., was reported by Mace's office to the Capitol Police, leading to an immediate response. McIntyre, who had passed through security screening before entering the building, was tracked down by officers from the House Division and agents with the Threat Assessment Section. After an investigative interview, he was taken into custody.
Rep. Mace, who has been vocal about her opposition to transgender women using women's restrooms, particularly after introducing a resolution to ban such practices at the Capitol, took to X to share her ordeal. "I was physically accosted tonight on Capitol grounds over my fight to protect women," Mace wrote. She detailed minor injuries, mentioning a new brace for her wrist and ice for her arm, but affirmed she would recover, stating, "Your tr*ns violence and threats on my life will only make me double down."
This incident comes at a time when Mace's legislative actions have stirred significant controversy and debate, with some seeing her policies as protective measures for women's spaces, while others view them as discriminatory against transgender individuals. The assault has not only highlighted the physical risks politicians can face but also the heated nature of current political discourse around transgender rights.
The Capitol Police confirmed the arrest and the charge against McIntyre but have not yet released further details regarding the motive behind the assault. The Rayburn House Office Building was open to the public at the time of the attack, which has led to questions about security measures in place for members of Congress.
Reactions on social media have been mixed, with many expressing support for Mace and condemning violence against political figures, while others have used the incident to discuss the broader implications for transgender rights and political rhetoric.
