A Legacy of Peace and Service Ends in His Beloved Hometown

Plains, Georgia - December 29, 2024 - In the quiet, rural town of Plains, Georgia, where he was born and where he returned to after his political career, former President Jimmy Carter has died at the age of 100. The announcement was made by the Carter Center, confirming that Carter passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family, marking the end of an era for a man whose life was as much defined by his post-presidential years as by his time in the White House.

Carter, who served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981, was known for his commitment to human rights, his groundbreaking work in peace negotiations, including the historic Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, and his establishment of formal diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. However, it was perhaps his life after the presidency that solidified his place in history.

Following his one term in office, Carter dedicated himself to humanitarian work, co-founding the Carter Center in Atlanta with his wife, Rosalynn Carter, to advance human rights and alleviate human suffering around the globe. His hands-on approach to philanthropy, including volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, where he was often seen hammering nails and raising walls alongside volunteers, endeared him to people worldwide.

In recent years, Carter faced numerous health challenges, including melanoma that had spread to his brain, from which he remarkably recovered. He entered hospice care in February 2023, choosing to spend his remaining days at home with his family, a decision that sparked national conversation about end-of-life care. His wife, Rosalynn, joined him in hospice care just days before her death in November 2023, after a battle with dementia.

Carter's death comes as a moment of reflection on a life that spanned nearly a century, witnessing and shaping some of the most significant moments of American history. Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum, lauding his integrity, his faith, and his tireless efforts in serving others.

The Carter family has asked for privacy as they mourn but also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support from around the world. Plans for a state funeral and memorial services are expected to be announced in the coming days, with many anticipating that Plains will see an influx of visitors paying their respects to one of its most famous sons, whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
