Actor and longtime Democratic fundraiser George Clooney has publicly called on President Joe Biden to end his reelection bid, citing concerns about Biden's ability to win against former President Donald Trump in the upcoming November election.
Clooney, who recently helped raise a record $30 million for Biden's campaign, wrote in a New York Times opinion piece that the president he saw three weeks ago at a fundraiser was "not the Joe 'big F-ing deal' Biden of 2010" and "not even the Joe Biden of 2020." He argued that Democrats "are not going to win in November" with Biden at the top of the ticket and predicted they would also lose control of the House and Senate.
"It's devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fund-raiser was not the Joe 'big F-ing deal' Biden of 2010," Clooney wrote. "He wasn't even the Joe Biden of 2020. But our party leaders need to stop telling us that 51 million people didn't see what we just saw."
Clooney's call for Biden to drop out comes as the president has faced growing doubts from within his own party about his ability to defeat Trump in a rematch. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has also signaled that Biden should consider stepping aside, saying it's "up to the president to decide if he is going to run" and that "time is running short."
Biden's campaign has pointed to a letter the president sent to congressional Democrats earlier in the week vowing to stay in the race. However, Clooney's high-profile defection is likely to increase pressure on the president to reconsider his decision to seek reelection at the age of 81.
