A Boeing 747-400 operated by Garuda Indonesia was forced to make an emergency landing shortly after takeoff from Makassar, Indonesia, on Wednesday, May 15th, 2024, due to an engine fire. The aircraft was en route to Madinah, Saudi Arabia, carrying 468 people, including pilgrims for the Hajj.

The incident unfolded as the aircraft, registered as ER-BOS, was performing flight GA-1105 from Indonesia's Makassar Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (UPG) to Medina Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Airport (MED). Shortly after takeoff, flames were observed emanating from the number four engine, located on the outboard right wing and identified as a Pratt & Whitney PW4056.

Despite the dramatic situation, the pilots displayed remarkable composure and continued the takeoff procedure. They climbed the aircraft to a safe altitude before initiating a return to Makassar. The pilots successfully landed the Boeing 747 back at the airport, ensuring the safety of all 450 passengers and crew on board.

The passengers and crew were provided accommodation while waiting for a replacement aircraft to take them to Medina. The incident has garnered significant attention, and authorities are likely conducting a thorough inspection of the aircraft to determine the cause of the malfunction and ensure the airworthiness of the Boeing 747 before it returns to service.

Garuda Indonesia, the national flag carrier of Indonesia, has suffered from a series of incidents in recent years, raising concerns about its safety record. The airline, which is 60 percent owned by the Indonesian state, has faced challenges including grounding the majority of its fleet over travel restrictions and declining demand during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs has expressed regret over the engine damage and has reiterated its call for Garuda Indonesia to adhere to its commitment to the security and safety of Hajj pilgrims. The national airline is scheduled to fly 109,000 prospective Hajj pilgrims to the Holy Land this year.

As investigations into the incident continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of passengers and crew, and maintaining the integrity of the airline's operations.
