CNN has confirmed plans to lay off hundreds of employees this week. The decision comes as the network aims to pivot from traditional cable television to a more robust digital-first strategy.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the layoffs are part of a broader restructuring effort designed to lower production costs and consolidate production teams. CNN's CEO, Mark Thompson, has signaled a strategic shift towards enhancing the network's global digital audience, with Warner Bros. Discovery investing $70 million to support these new digital initiatives. However, this transition also means a significant reduction in staff, with approximately 200 positions or 6% of CNN's workforce being eliminated.
The layoffs will not impact CNN's most recognizable on-air talent, but will primarily affect production crews, especially those based in New York and Washington, where the majority of the network's prime time shows are produced.
There's also a plan to relocate some production to Atlanta, where costs are lower.
This move follows a trend seen across the news industry as fewer viewers tune into linear TV, pushing networks to innovate in digital spaces. CNN has already begun building out digital subscription products, including a digital paywall launched in October, which charges users $3.99 per month.
Thompson emphasized in a memo to staff that these changes are essential for CNN to maintain its journalistic integrity while adapting to new audience consumption habits. He stated, "America and the world need high quality, fair-minded, trustworthy sources of news more than ever. This difficult and sometimes painful process of change is the only way to make sure we can still provide it."
NBC News is also reportedly planning much smaller-scale layoffs this week, further indicating the industry-wide shift towards digital platforms.
This restructuring comes at a time when CNN has faced challenges with declining ratings, particularly post-election, suggesting that these layoffs and digital initiatives are a strategic response to both economic pressures and consumer behavior changes in media consumption.
