76% of Speech Watchers Back President’s Vision, Highlighting Hope and Unity

March 5, 2025 - Washington, D.C. – A CBS News poll released today shows that a significant majority of viewers approved of President Donald Trump’s joint address to Congress delivered on the evening of March 4, 2025. The survey, conducted immediately following the speech, found that 76% of those who tuned in expressed approval of the president’s remarks, while just 23% disapproved.

The poll, based on interviews with 1,207 adults who watched the address, underscores a largely positive reception to Trump’s message, which focused on his administration’s early achievements and outlined ambitious plans for his second term. The sample was drawn from a broader initial survey of 11,406 U.S. adults conducted by YouGov between February 28 and March 3, with follow-up interviews targeting those who viewed the speech. The results were weighted to reflect demographic factors such as gender, age, race, education, and 2024 presidential vote, ensuring a representative snapshot of the audience.

Viewers described the president as “presidential,” “inspiring,” and “entertaining,” with many noting that the speech instilled feelings of hope and pride. A striking 68% of respondents said Trump’s address made them feel “hopeful,” while a majority also praised its unifying tone over divisiveness. The heavily Republican-leaning audience—typical for presidential addresses—likely bolstered these figures, though CBS did not disclose the exact partisan breakdown.

The speech, which marked Trump’s return to the Capitol six weeks into his second term, highlighted his administration’s swift actions, including immigration reforms, tariff implementations, and efforts to reduce federal spending. Two-thirds of viewers felt Trump addressed issues they care about, with particular support for his plans to tackle inflation—a persistent concern for Americans. About 67% of respondents believed the president presented a clear strategy for lowering prices, a key voter priority.

One notable moment came when House Speaker Mike Johnson ordered the removal of Rep. Al Green (D-TX) from the chamber for repeatedly interrupting Trump. The CBS poll found that 76% of viewers approved of this decision, reflecting broad support for maintaining decorum during the address.

While the speech resonated strongly with its audience, the partisan tilt of viewers suggests Trump’s message may face a tougher reception among the broader public. Nonetheless, the poll offers an early indication of enthusiasm for his agenda among supporters. As one viewer put it, the address was “a bold vision for America’s future,” signaling that Trump’s second term is off to a robust start—at least among those who tuned in.

The CBS News survey aligns with other immediate reactions, including a CNN poll showing 69% of viewers had a positive response. Together, these findings highlight a successful night for the president as he seeks to build momentum for his policy goals in the months ahead.
