Basketball fans around the world are mourning the loss of one of the sport's all-time greats. Jerry West, known as "The Logo" for being the inspiration behind the NBA's iconic logo, has passed away at the age of 86.
West spent his entire 14-year playing career with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he became synonymous with brilliant basketball. He was a 14-time All-Star, a 12-time All-NBA selection, and a five-time All-Defensive Team member. West led the Lakers to the NBA Finals nine times, winning his first and only championship in 1972.
In addition to his playing career, West had a successful career as a coach and executive. He coached the Lakers for three years, leading them to the playoffs each year and earning a Western Conference Finals berth once. He then worked as a player scout for three years before becoming the general manager of the Lakers before the 1982-83 NBA season.
West's impact on the game of basketball cannot be overstated. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980 and was named to the NBA 35th Anniversary Team in 1980, the NBA 50th Anniversary Team in 1996, and the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021.
Off the court, West was known for his dedication to the game and his relentless pursuit of perfection. He was a perfectionist who never seemed satisfied with his own performance, and this trait carried over into his coaching and executive roles.
The NBA community is devastated by the loss of one of its greatest legends. Jerry West will be remembered as one of the greatest players, coaches, and executives in the history of the game.
