The activist group Black Lives Matter (BLM) has called on the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to host a virtual snap primary across the country before their August convention, following Vice President Kamala Harris securing the nomination. The group is criticizing the current nominating process and urging more public involvement in the selection of the presidential candidate.
In a statement released on Tuesday, BLM emphasized the importance of protecting the integrity of democracy and the voices of Black voters. The organization highlighted the unprecedented political landscape and stressed the need for decisive action to ensure that the nomination process is fair and transparent.
"This moment calls for decisive action to protect the integrity of our democracy and the voices of Black voters," the statement read. "We call for the Rules Committee to create a process that allows for public participation in the nomination process, not just a nomination by party delegates."
The statement from BLM, a movement that played a key role in the 2020 global protests over police violence, adds to the chorus of left-leaning voices supporting Harris after President Biden's endorsement on Sunday. However, the organization has criticized the Democratic Party's handling of Biden's candidacy and withdrawal, describing it as "troubling" and alleging that party elites and donors influenced the process unduly.
Harris' campaign has seen significant support and funding from Black leaders and advocates. Just hours after securing the nomination, her campaign raked in $100 million, with millions coming from the rapid mobilization of Black leaders and advocates.
The DNC has yet to respond to BLM's demands, but Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison said on Monday that the party will deliver a presidential nominee by Aug. 7. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the call for an open and transparent nomination process has gained traction, with many looking to ensure that the voices of all voters are heard and respected.
