Washington, D.C. — President Joe Biden has made it clear that he would consider stepping down from the presidential race if doctors diagnosed him with a serious medical condition. In an interview with BET News, Biden was asked about the circumstances under which he might reconsider his decision to stay in the race.
"If I had some medical condition that emerged, if somebody — if doctors came to me and said you got this problem, that problem," Biden replied, according to a video clip released by the network.
This statement comes amidst growing concerns about Biden's health and mental acuity, particularly following his debate performance last month against former President Donald Trump. His comments also follow calls from some Democratic allies for him to withdraw from the race, citing concerns about his ability to defeat Trump in the November election.
Biden has maintained that he is healthy and fit to be president for another four years. However, he has faced criticism for his age and health, with some Democrats calling for him to step aside.
In the interview, Biden also discussed his original intention to serve only one term and pass the torch to a younger leader. "When I originally ran, you may remember Ed, I said I was going to be a transitional candidate, and I thought that I would be able to move from this and pass it on to someone else," he said.
Despite the pressure to withdraw, Biden has remained defiant, saying that he has demonstrated his ability to get things done for the country. "I think I've demonstrated that I know how to get things done for the country in spite of the fact that we were told we couldn't get it done," he added.
The president has also faced scrutiny over his mental fitness and acuity, particularly following his debate performance. However, he has vowed to continue his campaign, saying that he would only reconsider his decision if doctors diagnosed him with a medical condition.
The Democratic National Committee has announced that it will hold a virtual vote to confirm Biden as the party's nominee next month, although the exact date has not yet been announced.
